If you are a non-EU citizen planning to study in Bulgaria, you will need to apply for a Type D Student Visa. This visa allows you to live and study in Bulgaria legally and may also allow part-time work during your studies.

General Visa D Requirements for Students

Who Needs It?
🌍 All non-EU citizens intending to study in Bulgaria.

Required Documents:

  1. Completed Visa D Application Form
    (In English or Bulgarian, matching passport spelling; downloadable from the Bulgarian consulate's website)

  2. Valid Passport

    • Must be valid at least 3 months after your intended departure date

    • Issued within the last 10 years

    • Minimum of 2 blank pages

  3. Recent Passport-Size Photo

    • Light background, face clearly visible

  4. Letter of Acceptance from a Bulgarian University

  5. Educational Certificates

    • High school diploma or university degree (as applicable)

    • Official translation into Bulgarian

    • Legalized or apostilled if necessary

  6. Health Insurance

    • Valid in the EU

    • Minimum coverage of €30,000 (emergency and repatriation)

  7. Proof of Tuition Payment

    • Official receipt or invoice from the university

  8. Proof of Financial Means

    • Recent bank statement showing sufficient funds

    • Or notarized financial support letter from sponsor/parents

  9. Travel Ticket Booking

    • Round-trip ticket reservation

  10. Proof of Accommodation

    • Notarized lease agreement, university dorm confirmation, or a notarized declaration of hosting

  11. Criminal Record Certificate

    • Issued by your country of origin, officially translated into Bulgarian

  12. Translation & Legalization of All Foreign Documents

    • All non-Bulgarian documents must be translated and legalized or apostilled

Submission Format

Documents must be submitted in original paper format and on USB, with the following conditions:

  • All files must be named clearly in PDF format

  • The photo should be in JPG format

  • All documents must be fully readable and properly scanned

Important Notes

  • Once your documents are approved by the university, the Ministry of Education will issue a Certificate of Eligibility to study in Bulgaria.

  • After receiving the certificate and your official acceptance letter, you can apply for the visa at the Bulgarian consulate in your home country.

Work During Studies
The student visa allows you to work part-time or in temporary roles, provided it does not interfere with your academic schedule.
